Finder is the visual file manager default on macOS . In this way, any user who use a Mac use it when you use your computer, because even the desktop is loaded by the Finder, this application with smiley face.

the best tricks of the Finder

today will see a series of tricks for this great and fundamental application. See how many you know already before…

1. Align icons in folders and on the desktop

If you are using the option to see the folders as icons and want to have them lined up, either have done desktop chaos, this is for you.

we have two ways of doing so. The first is to align it in directly. To do this we will give you right click and select “align” . In this way, all the folder or desktop icons are ranked according to an invisible grid.

but this will work only once. And how to do if we want to make it permanent? For that we will do right click and click on “show view options” . There, in the section “Sort by” mark “align to grid” option . If we want that this applies by default all folders, press the button “Settings by default” .

2 folders smart

the smart folders are something really useful . They allow us to create “folders” that automatically update according to certain criteria. And how are they used? Its use can be very simple or very complex, depending on how complex is what we want to do. That is why I am going to refer to the following article: “All about smart in macOS folders” .

3. Tags

as smart folders allow us to more quickly access the files that we seek, the labels also. The labels are a tool of the Finder that allow us to organize our files .

this can put each file tags that define its content. And how to create labels? This is done by the Finder Preferences . “I have for example defined the following tags:

Add and remove tags of the Finer. Add and remove tags of the Finer.

Then, to Add tags to a file just right click the file and mark labels want, either from the option that appears in the Finder window.

4 view quick

is for me this one of the best features of the Finder . View quick allows us to take a quick look to a file, or else see your information.

for this simply click on a file and press the space bar. In the case of files which have native support or have an application with a plugin for quick preview it will show us a preview file Otherwise it will show us information about the file: name, icon, size and modification date.

5. Rename files en masse

this is a trick that I personally use quite. Yet there are very few people that know them, and that can save you much time in change the name to multiple files at once . To which we will have to select the files, either by dragging the cursor, or by selecting with Cmd or Shift . After you select the files we will give to “Rename X items…” .

once done will appear a menu with various options. The first will see is ‘replace text’ . This option allows us to replace a string in all the files selected by another. This option is perfect if you want to eliminate a common text in all files, or change the channel “1-” by “Topic 1”, for example.

The next option is “add text” . This option is similar to the previous, but which instead allows you to add text at the beginning or at the end of the file name.

Finally we have the “format” option . With this option we can add a counter, both before and after the name of the file. Alternatively, if we introduce a text in the field “Custom format” can delete the old name and replace it with the new counter. But the magic of this comes when we can combine the three options.

6. create alias

users who come from a computer with Windows, perhaps throw under the famous shortcuts . But those there are also in macOS, although with a different name: Alias .

to create one of these shortcuts, or alias, simply select the file and give you secondary click and select “create alias” . Alternatively, you can select the file and from the top menu in the “Archive” section check the above.

this will create an alias, which you can drag and lead to where we want to. When we do click on it will cause the same effect that make it over the original file. In addition, it is worth noting, if one does not know it, that file does not duplicate but it only creates a link to the original . “

7. “show original file” and “Show package contents”

related to the above we have these two options. The first, “Show original file” which you get when you right click on a aka directs us to the location of the original file.

the second “Show package contents” comes when we give you right click to a application and shows the files that are contained within this. What do I mean? As some of you already know, formed *.app macOS applications do not cease to be folders. Therefore, with this option we can take a look at files that are inside.

“show package contents” allows us to see files within an app.

8 compressed files in ZIP

almost any operating system has support for compressed files in ZIP default . Which include the three most used, Windows, macOS and Linux. In addition, these last two also include native support for TAR archives .

to decompress this kind of files is very simple, just double click. And to compress files from the Finder ZIP can we make? This is just as simple. Simply select the folder, file or files that you want to compress and select the option “compress XYZ . “

Perhaps its most popular use is the store movies or songs, but this optical discs are also useful for saving files . Why? Because they are a very economical support and that does not happen anything if you lose or if given a copy to someone else.

recording folders do and how we do to record a disc of datyou on macOS? First, when your Mac does not have an optimal disk drive and you are going to use an external you must connect it . If you don’t do this you will not be “new recording folder” option under the “File” menu in the Finder.
